Saab receives contract for ANZAC Missile Defence Project The defence and security company Saab has been awarded a contract for the latest phase of a project to upgrade the capability of the Australian ANZAC Class frigates to counter 21st century maritime threats. This phase will install the CEA Technologies phased array radar giving the ship unprecedented defensive capability under the control of the Saab 9LV Combat Management System.
The Royal Australian Navy’s ANZAC Class frigates have continued evolutionary development of the ship’s capability under an Alliance contract arrangement managed by Saab, the Australian Defence Materiel Organisation and BAE Systems. “The Alliance has managed the ship’s capability development for more than a decade and this has led to innovation and capability improvement that would not have been possible otherwise,” said Lindsay Pears, Managing Director of Saab Technologies Australia Pty Ltd. “It also proves the unique flexibility of the Saab 9LV Combat Management System and Saab’s combat systems engineering capability.” “The integration of phased array radar, ESSM and CMS by Saab provides a first class solution for the ANZAC anti-ship missile defence capability” said Commodore Mick Uzzell, Director General of Major Surface Ships. The phased array radar and combat management system upgrade will be delivered to Australia’s most modern warship, HMAS PERTH, in 2011.
