Airservices Australia teams up with LFV and Saab for remotely operated air traffic control tower trial

Defence and security company Saab and the LFV Group (Sweden’s
air navigation services provider) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airservices Australia for delivery and support
of a remotely operated tower solution for trials in Australia.

"This marks the international breakthrough for our remotely operated tower solution,” says Per Ahl, sales director for Saab’s ATM solutions. ”Airservices Australia is our first customer for this solution, and as such of great importance. Their trials will be a reference for other potential customers."

Air Services CEO Greg Russell said ”The trial reflected the agency’s ongoing commitment to the development and implementation of new technology to make aviation safer, more environmentally friendly and more efficient.”

The solution, developed by Saab with the LFV Group as operational partner,
was launched in spring 2009 after thorough live testings. It allows for the air traffic around several small and medium sized airports to be managed and controlled from a single air traffic control centre, thus reducing costs and at
the same time increasing efficiency and security.

Airservices Australia’s trials will take place in site yet to be selected by Airservices. After the trials, Airservices Australia will decide if they are to introduce the solution on a number of airports including in the remote north-west of Australia.
